A message from the Founder and Chair

May 2008

Greetings!

The month of May not only brings flowers, it marks the beginning of the end of Teenshop's program year.

Last month, for our annual Women's History Month Celebration, we focused on leadership. Our event is now called the Women's History Month Leadership Luncheon, and we honored two outstanding women from different generations. Visit our 2008 Women's History Month Program page to see recipients of the She's A Leader and Rising Leader Awards. We're also proud that participants from our Summer Leadership Program at Bryn Mawr College shared their experiences by presenting a slide presentation of that first ever program.

The Philadelphia chapter of the NAACP held a gala luncheon honoring the 100 Most Influential African-American Women in Philadelphia during Women's History Month. I felt blessed to be among these women who are committed to making a difference in our community.

I've shared with you that Girls Achieve, a school day program to empower adolescent girls, was created at the request of a Philadelphia district principal to help keep her eighth grade girls focused on graduating and achieving their goals. The program is currently underway in the Philadelphia district, as well as Delaware County's William Penn School District, and it's wonderful to see girls really appreciate our efforts.

Happy Mother's Day to all of you birth mothers, and women who are helping other mother's raise their daughters. We are all in this together!

Always count your blessings.

NAACP Award as one of the most Influential African-American Women in Philadelphia

I believe that those of us who have more must do more to help others. I learned that lesson early in life by example from my parents. God has blessed me abundantly and Teenshop is among those blessings that provide an opportunity for me to give service to others in a very special way.
