About Our Chapter
Mount Carmel Teenshop was founded in January of 1999 by a group of dedicated women from Mount Carmel Baptist Church in West Philadelphia. Our chapter has a strong history of Community Service and has participated in a variety of projects to include Philadelphia Care Days, clothing and toy drives for women and children shelters, collecting clothing and toiletries for Nursing Homes and shelters, providing school supplies for children in Africa. We have made colorful fleece pillow cases for pediatric cancer patients at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and held an Everybody's Birthday Party at Mercy Hospice by providing gifts and toys for the women and children at the facility. Our teens have been involved in many youth summits and served as hostesses for the Stand for Youth & Education Expo sponsored by The Judge Mathis Foundation in 2007.
Our annual college tour provides our teens with exposure to college life. We visit historically black colleges and universities as well as mainstream Ivy League colleges and universities. To date, we have toured Cheyney University, Lincoln University, Coppin State University, Albright College, Delaware State University, Princeton University, Neumann College, Chestnut Hill College, and Bryn Mawr College. Every year in March, Teenshop, Inc. sponsors a Women's History Program. We encourage our teens to participate in the essay contests, which helps them tune their writing skills. Our teens have excelled and we are proud of their efforts each year: 1st in 2006, 2nd and 3rd in 2007; three participants in 2008, three in 2009 and one in 2010!
Several of Mount Carmel's rising juniors have participated in Teenshop's Annual Residential Summer Leadership Conference on the beautiful Bryn Mawr campus for a unique series living and learning with fellow Teenshop sisters. We have been blessed to have a rising senior participate each year since its inception in 2007.
Through the years Mount Carmel has been blessed with women who are dedicated to enriching the lives of teen girls, beginning with the founding officers: Dr. Claudia Curry, Executive Director; Carolyn Casiano, Secretary; Juanita Burton, MD, Treasurer; Brenda Wingate, Program Director; Joyce Williams, Community Service Director. I truly thank all the women who have forged the path for Mount Carmel Teenshop and truly thank our current officers who have displayed great enthusiasm and a true willingness to "SERVE" our teens!
